my whole life changed after that. >> reporter: holly says at 14 she was vulnerable, depressed. it was more than teenage angst. it was at the mall she met a man who would change her lifeforever. >> i just felt special he was calling me out of the crowd and connecting with me. >> reporter: they exchanged numbers and talked every other night for about two weeks. >> what kind of movies do i like? where do i want to go? what do i like to do? it was just a friendship. by the time he started pushing for me to run away, it sounded like a good idea. >> reporter: he promised to take her to a dance club. he took her to a motel in atlantic city. >> there was a woman in the motel room. she was very, very pretty, and he kind of handed me over to her and said, get her ready. >> they took her to the street and sold her body for money. >> the two of them haggled on a price, and she told him to go and get a car and pick me up

directly and take me directly to the hotel room. >> what followed was 36 hours of hell, a mortifying arrest and a lifetime of suicide attempts and secrets. >> when you talk to young kids about this, you can't say human trafficking. you have to say what the real words are. the real word is a pimp. >> reporter: gina is a pioneer. >> hello. >> reporter: since 2008, her nonprofit, courtney's house in d.c. has helped more than 500 local sex trafficking victims. she's part mom, part activist, part cop. >> they look like your children. >> reporter: and all fighter. her goal? to open your eyes. >> if you're not explaining it, a trafficker is explaining it to your child and he's not telling the truth. >> reporter: after 17 years of secrets, holly met tina. you could say she saved her life. >> it was 2009 when i met tina. i didn't even know what happened to me. i thought i had chosen to become a prostitute.

it wasn't until i learned about child sex trafficking that i understood how i was exploited and manipulated. >> we really need to understand it's all races, all colors, all backgrounds. >> reporter: from nice areas and from bad, the target mostly girls age 12 to 14, from a place we all visit. >> they all traffic at one place, that's at the mall. >> reporter: that's why tina makes it her life mission to go undercover and intervene. we can't say which malls or show you her operation. if you're wondering how tina knows so much, she was trafficked, too. she ran away at 14 to her would- be pimp's home. >> there were other girls there. the next process is what everyone goes through and that would be the season process. that is where he had two men come in and rape me. >> reporter: after a year of prostitution, then juvenile detention.

like holly, tina had nowhere to turn. as she got stronger and slowly pulled herself from the life, she helped others do the same. >> they came to my door, trying to bust my windows out to find them. there were no services for anybody. >> reporter: courtney's house was founded in 2008 and she's given victims a voice. >> meeting somebody else, the similar story helps me to realize that i was a victim, and it helped me to feel empowered. >> reporter: tina urges parents to number one, check their teen's phone and check facebook. you should have their password, because that's how traffickers communicate. teens should never hang out without an adult at the mall. also the good news, such a sad, sad story that holly is actually happily married to a microbiologist. she lives in richmond, virginia, and is working hard on writing a book about sex trafficking and also she writes a column in the washington

times community. >> this is great work. it's important work. are these ladies also working with the police to try to help them, to help them understand from the victims' perspective? >> absolutely. >> here's what happens on this side and here's what i'm doing on the advocacy side. >> it's a great question, because both women told me when they were arrested, police didn't understand. they made them feel lease an human. it was a different time. these women felt humiliated. but now tina does talk to police and she tells them exactly how they want to be treated. she helps the victims and actually trains them on what to look for, because who better to know. >> this is so important, because we all send our kids to the mall and think they can go there. we'll pick you up. it will be fine. >> it's a rite of passage. you don't think this will happen. the parents need to know about it. great job, deb. >> thank you so much. thanks to tina and holly. >> absolutely. derek. >> thanks, ladies. let's talk a bit about this

aside from talk of baseball, the biggest news coming out of viera, florida, spring training are allegations against pitcher gio gonzalez that claim he used performance enhancing drugs. now it seems gio may be off the hook. according to an espn report he was a client at a clinic in south florida but the substances he received were not those banned by major league baseball. gonzalez repeatedly denied using p.e.d.es. of course the league is still investigating.

spring training against the mets. you can see that game right here on wusa 9. with just a handful of games left everyone is a must win for teams like maryland. they got their big win over duke on saturday but the key tonight was avoiding that dreaded let down. doesn't unfortunately that's exactly what we got. things started off well for the terps thanks to this guy. his third 3 in a row. the eagles come back though. nice feed to wells. we are all tied up. but in the end, the eagles had just a bit more less in the tank than maryland. boston college wins this one 69- 58. virginia taking on second ranked miami. what a game this was. 11 seconds to go. game tied at 50. sadly, reggie johnson opened underneath. the hurricanes get a big steal off the inbound and hold on to win 5-4. they have now beaten every team in the scc during his two seasons at miami.
